What Camera Gear We Use In 2020

Are you wondering what camera gear we use in our travels? Definitely not the best equipment ever! However, we have carefully considered each of our purchases. In this way, year after year, we have collected our camera gear for all our work and travel. We are often asked what camera gear we use so we thought we’d write a little bit about it!

Camera body

Without a doubt, the heart of all our projects is our beloved Sony A7III. This camera boasts a 24.2 megapixels full-frame sensor. In addition, the A7 III has a native range of ISO 100-51,200. Also perfect for low-light situations. It shoots video at 4K up to 30fps, our favorite resolution for vlogs. However, we prefer to use 1080p at 120fps for cinematic slow-motion. Moreover, it has a partially folding screen, useful both in videos and photos. The menu of this camera is complete and not as difficult to understand as many says.

One of the best things about the Sony A7III is the durability of its NP-FZ100 battery. In fact, after a long day with many photos and videos, there’s still battery life remaining. Another thing we love about this camera? Its size. Actually, it’s easy to pack in a bag and travel with. For all these reasons and beyond the Sony A7III is our primary camera in all our travels around the world.

However, we took our first photos with another camera, the Nikon D5000. This is a 12.3-megapixel DX-format DSLR Nikon F-mount camera, announced by Nikon on April 14th 2009. Of course, nothing compared to the Sony A7III. For this reason, we now use Nikon very rarely.

Lenses

We take most of our photos with the Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 lens. In addition, this is our lens for vlogs and all landscape shots. We love the quality and versatility of the 16-35mm, especially when we travel. However, this lens has two cons: price and weight. First of all, with its 518g we cannot consider it as a light lens. Moreover, it has a price tag of around $800, so perhaps not the best lens to start with. However, if you’re looking for a versatile zoom lens, we highly recommend this one!

Another lens always in our camera bag is the Sony SEL85F18 FE 85mm f/1.8. This lens is perfect for portraits, close-ups, photos and videos with bokeh. Furthermore, with its 371g it is an ideal lens for traveling. We love creating cinematic footages and b-rolls with the 85mm. You can buy this lens for around $550.

We’ve used these lenses in the past with the Nikon body: Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3, Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6.

Other cameras

Our new GoPro Hero8 Black is really fun to use and easy. Usually, we use it for underwater videos or photos and for small videos to be used in our social channels. The pros of this action cam are above all stabilization and TimeWarp mode. In fact, with HyperSmooth 2.0 + Boost, all videos are incredibly stabilized. In addition, this camera takes quality photos even if we much prefer the Sony A7III. Many GoPro users love to vlog with this camera. However, we haven’t tried it yet!

Many times we love to use our DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone for photos and aerial shots. In fact, Mavic 2 Pro boasts the Hasselblad L1D-20c camera, with 20 megapixels and videos up to 4k 30fps. Previously we had the first version of the Mavic, however, in our opinion, this is much better for both video and photos.

Are you passionate about instant photography? We discovered this passion a few years ago. In fact, thanks to our Leica Sofort, we took hundreds of instant photos during our travels. Afterwards, we created many albums with all our instant photos and memories. This is one of our favorite things and it’s a lot of fun! Actually, our purpose is to have all our memories on the wall and not just on hard drives or on social media. Don’t you think?

Memory Cards / Hard Drives

Of course, we use SD cards to save all our photos on the cameras. These are the only SD cards that we recommend because we feel very safe with them:

Then we save all our photos and videos on our external hard drives. It’s no secret that we make multiple backups of all the material in case something goes wrong. In fact, losing all the photos/videos of a day or a longer period is something we really want to avoid! For this reason, we work very well with these hard drives:

Tripods

We are often asked who takes our photos. The answer is 99% of the time our beloved tripod! In fact, Manfrotto Befree Advanced is our inseparable travel companion.

We also use the Manfrotto Pixi Evo to hold our Sony during our vlogs. The Manfrotto Pixi Evo is our favorite tripod because it is light, small and flexible.
