Tallinn is full of colourful streets, scenic viewing points, beautiful doors, quirky cafes and long stories to tell. If you are looking for the best Instagram spots in this city, this article is perfect for you! We visited this charming Baltic capital thanks to @visitestonia and we were so excited about this opportunity from the beginning. Tallinn is a very beautiful city, an extraordinary mix of modern and old, which you could visit at any time during the year and is extremely photogenic. We were there in July and had a wonderful time. In the future, we would love to visit it in winter because especially during the Christmas season it’s magical with its typical markets. Here is a list of the most insta-worthy photographic spots in Tallinn, so if you are interested in this, read on!
#1 Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform
Have you ever seen the wall with a catchy quote “the times we had”? This is certainly the best-known spot in Tallinn thanks to Instagram. This place is called Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform, located on the north side of Toompea Hill, offers an epic view of the Old Town with its red roofs. With its view and that pastel pink wall, this platform is a perfect and totally insta-worthy place that attracts visitors at all hours of the day. Best time: This platform is a favourite for amateur and professional photographers so don’t expect to be alone. During the day there are many tourists there especially at sunset so come early in the morning at sunrise.
#2 Raekoja Plats
Town Hall Square, also known as Raekoja Plats, is the heart of the city of Tallinn with its colourful houses and the Gothic town hall as its main building. In this square, there are also many restaurants and an old pharmacy really interesting to visit. You can take pictures in various picturesque corners but our favourite spot is between three/four coloured houses with the Troika restaurant in the centre. Best time: we’ve chosen to visit this square as the first stop very early in the morning. We were in the square at 6:30 am and there was nobody there! It was very nice to see the sunrise with its colors in the Tallinn square. In the summer we recommend visiting this square in the morning for your perfect shot because after 10 am it starts to get crowded.
#3 Kadriorg Palace
This palace, located a few kilometres from the centre of Tallinn, now houses an art museum with paintings by western and Russian artists of the 16th and 20th centuries. The interiors are beautiful and worth a visit that it will cost you a few euros. Outside the building, there is a splendid garden, cared for by expert gardeners, with many flowers. If you go to one of the two corners you’ll have a perfect perspective with the palace and a beautiful fountain in front of you, as you can see from our photo. Best time: the area around the palace is large and at midday in July it was not crowded. So, don’t worry, maybe come here at sunset for better light.
#4 Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Located on Toompea Hill, this stunning richly decorated cathedral was built by Tsar Alexander III in 1900. It was dedicated to Prince Alexander Nevsky when Estonia was part of the Russian Empire. It comprises 11 bells, including Tallinn’s largest bell of 15 tons. The interior is decorated with icons and various mosaics. The visit inside is free but we were unable to enter because it was closed. Best time: the morning sun rises behind the cathedral and is perfect for your photos. Look at our photo to get an idea of the final result!
#5 Patkuli Viewing Platform
If we had to choose a place in Tallinn, this would be definitely one of our favourites. The Patkuli viewing platform is located on Toompea Hill in the Old Town and you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city. We felt like we were in a Disney movie when we saw the castle towers, the church spires and the Gulf of Finland in the backdrop, just breathtaking. To reach this platform we climbed 157 steps from Snelli Park, but it was worth it! Best time: In the summer months this platform is crowded with tourists after 10 am, so our advice is to get here early in the morning when the seagulls fly in the sky and everything is picture-perfect for your Tallinn postcard!
#6 Rataskaevu Street
Tallinn’s old town is full of picturesque and colourful streets with typical shops and pretty pastry shops. These streets are Mündi Street, St. Catherine’s Passage, Saiakang, Pikk Street and Rataskaevu Street. The latter is our favourite because above the roofs of the houses stands the town hall in the background. Best time: the early morning is our choice to avoid tourists who stroll.
