Havana, the capital of Cuba born over 500 years ago, is definitely one of the most quirky and cool cities we have ever visited. We immediately fell in love with its history, its colourful buildings, classic cars and that vintage touch that makes this city a unique place in the world. If you plan to visit Cuba and of course Havana, this is a list of the 10 top Instagram spots in the city that you cannot miss!
#1 El Capitolio
The Capitolio is the landmark building of Havana and the whole of Cuba. It was built in 1929 and the renovation works finished only a few months ago. Therefore, we were lucky to see it in all its renewed splendour. Located in the centre of Havana, the Capitolio is quite similar to that in Washington D.C. We recommend two perspectives for your best shots: in front of the wide staircase; from the left side – central pavement. Best time: the best time is around 8:30 am when there are few people around, especially on the stairs. In addition, the building is completely illuminated by the sun while at sunrise as at sunset the structure is partly in the shade.
#2 Gran Teatro de la Habana
Next to the Capitolio is the fascinating Gran Teatro de la Habana one of the most iconic buildings in the city. The exterior details of the building and its sculptures are beautiful. Moreover, you can visit the interior with a guide that costs 5 CUC. At the entrance, there is a statue of the first dancer of the Cuban ballet Alicia Alonso to which the theatre is dedicated. From the outside, our favourite spot is from the sidewalk in front of the theatre. Especially at sunset when the theatre turns on its lights. The interiors are very charming. On the first floor, you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of Parque Central from one of the balconies. In addition, the central staircase is really insta-worthy!
#3 Classic Cars
There is no better experience than a classic car tour through Havana. You can choose between different coloured models of vintage cars and the type of service you want based on the tour you have in mind. Of course, we’ve chosen a pink car! The prices for a private tour are around 60 CUC for an hour and 100 CUC for two hours. However, like everything in Cuba you have to negotiate the final price and in this way gets a good deal. Remember, don’t miss a classic car tour if you visit this beautiful city!
#4 Paladar La Guarida
You definitely have to try one of our favourite restaurants in all of Cuba: Paladar La Guarida. Not only a perfect insta-worthy place but also excellent food and a rooftop bar with delicious cocktails. The restaurant is located in an early 20th-century building. It became famous in 1993 for the Oscar-nominated film Fresa y Chocolate. We recommend you to book your table in La Guarida well in advance because this restaurant is well known by tourists. Moreover, is always full of important personalities and international stars.
If you are only interested in the photographic side, the famous staircase is located on the first floor where you can freely access. In addition, you can look out onto the balcony on the first floor to enjoy a beautiful view of the street below. You’ll find another staircase much-photographed with the writing on the wall “Fidel” on the ground floor. However, we prefer the one on the first floor. Best time: visit this place in the morning for your photos when the restaurant is not open. You won’t find people going up and down the two stairs.
#5 Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski
This hotel not only offers 5-star luxury service in the heart of Havana. It boasts a fantastic 360-degree view and above all on the Capitolio and Parque Central from the rooftop swimming pool. You can enjoy a drink or dine at the rooftop bar-restaurant even if you are not a hotel guest. So in this way take your best pictures at sunset. Moreover, if you want to find out more through our experience in this gorgeous 5-star luxury hotel in Havana click here.
#6 Colourful Buildings
We are sure that you’ve seen this spot many times on Instagram. In our opinion, these colourful buildings are truly the essence of Cuba and Havana! The exact position of these buildings is really simple to find. In fact, they are in front of the Capitolio. Our favourite perspective for a perfect photo is in front of the buildings from the Capitolio sidewalk. Best time: maybe the best light is just before sunset. However, it could be a bit crowded so we chose sunrise when the sun is still behind the buildings.
#7 El Floridita
«My mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in El Floridita» said by Ernest Hemingway who loved this historic fish restaurant and cocktail bar. It is located in Old Havana, at the intersection of Calle Obispo and Calle Monserrate, near the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. We had lunch and tasted their famous daiquiri. Moreover, in the morning we took some photos in front of the red building with the beautiful sign “Floridita”. Best time: during the early morning because there are few people and cars around.
#8 Plaza de la Revolucion
One of the largest squares in South America with its 12 km². It is located a few kilometres away from Havana Vieja, between Havana Centro and the Vedado district. On one side of this square is the imposing José Martí Memorial, 109 meters high. On the opposite side, there are two government buildings on whose facades are placed the metal faces of the two famous heroes of the Cuban revolution Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos. Plus, you’ll find many colourful classic cars that can be rented for a city tour! Best time: the sunset lights are the best and don’t worry about the crowd because this square is giant.
#9 Streets of Old Havana / Havana Vieja
Built by Spanish rulers in the 16th century, Old Havana is the heart of the city. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Its streets are full of colorful buildings, some dilapidated, small shops, restaurants, churches and squares. The four main squares are: Plaza Vieja the most eclectic, Plaza de la Catedral with its famous baroque cathedral of San Cristóbal de la Habana, Plaza de Armas the oldest, Plaza de San Francisco de Asís located opposite the port of Havana. Don’t forget your camera when you visit these areas of Havana.
#10 Plaza de la Catedral
Considered one of the four main squares of Havana Vieja, it is famous above all for its Baroque cathedral dedicated to San Cristóbal. You can visit the interior of the cathedral for free during the day. In addition, you can climb the smaller of the two towers for 1 CUC. Best time: early in the morning when there are few people around you and the cathedral is closed.
